The spark of WWI was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princep. Princep was a member of the Black Hand a Serbian nationalist movement.

to explain the importance of the book All Quiet on the Western Front as antiwar literature.

One of the major purposes of propaganda is to dehumanize the enemy. The Allies did this by referring to the german soldier as a brutish man who had no respect for civility. He was more animal than human and he hurt men women and children alike with no remorse. They nick name him the Hun. Why do you think warring countries often dehumanize their adversaries?

1. Powerpoint Activity: World War One

When you finish this assignment, save the file and print out a HANDOUT sheet with the last six slides of the powerpoint presentation on a single page. These are the slides that you created. Staple this page to your worksheet and turn both pages into your teacher.

 

2. Pre AP Extension: In preparation for your test over All Quiet on the Western Front, watch the video at the link below. This video is not a substitute for reading the book, but it will give you some background concerning the book and the author, Erich Maria Remarque.
